New research published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concludes that advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) are the most cost-effective material for reducing mass in North American vehicles. “Cost models have traditionally associated a significant cost penalty with alternative materials” explained Steel Market Development Institute president Lawrence W. Kavanagh. “This is significant, as automakers have the challenging task of developing affordable vehicles that meet new and tightening regulations.”

U.S. Machine Tool Orders Slipped in June 2012-08-15

New orders for machine tools and related equipment totaled $462.95 million in June, a 0.6% fall off from May’s $465.54 million result, and a decline of 1.8% from the June 2011 figure of $471.49 million. However, the June 2012 result brings the year-to-date total for manufacturing technology orders to $2.68 billion, an 8.8% improvement over the first-half total for 2011.

Material Handling Equipment Demand to Grow 4% Annually 2012-08-15

Global demand for material handling products is forecast to climb 4.0 percent annually through 2016 to $123.6 billion, according to World Material Handling Products,a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm. The report states that opportunities will be best for sales of advanced equipment such as automated conveyors and automated guided vehicles, citing automation’s role in labor reduction.

Metalworking Business Index: April MBI at 54.9 – Industry Consistently Growing 2012-05-12

The Metalworking Business Index (MBI) is created from a monthly survey sent to manufacturing executives in the durable goods industries. The MBI is a diffusion index based on 50.0; it functions in the same way as the ISM’s PMI. When the MBI is above 50.0, the metalworking industry is expanding; when the MBI is below 50.0 the industry is contracting. The total MBI is a weighted average of the subindices for new orders, production, employees, inventories, exports, and supplier deliveries.
